Now that TIFF is officially over, Toronto can start getting excited about World MasterCard Fashion Week, which is happening from October 22-26, 2012 at David Pecaut Square on King Street West (The Tents). The tentative schedule for Spring 2013 collections has just been announced, and if you’ve never been before, here are a few designers you should look out for.
PINK TARTAN (Monday, October 22 @ 8 p.m.)
One of the first shows I ever saw during Toronto Fashion Week (back in 2008) was Pink Tartan, and I was so impressed by how on-trend the collection was, in terms of colour and style. Kimberley Newport-Mimran, president and head designer of Pink Tartan, has been involved in the industry for over 12 years now, and the collections just keep getting better. If you get a chance, check out Pink Tartan at The Bay, and if you like what you see, go to the show as they unveil the new Spring 2013 collection.
MATIS BY LUCIAN MATIS (Wednesday, October 24 @ 6 p.m.)
I’ll tell you right now, I’m biased because Lucian Matis is my favourite Canadian designer, but he is extremely talented. The collections he showcases at Toronto Fashion Week are always created with a few key colours and fabrics, but each piece is transformed into something extravagant and completely different from the rest. Lucian Matis originally comes from the first season of Slice network’s Project Runway Canada, where he gained a huge fanbase after coming in second place. His collection has also been featured in Canada’s Next Top Model. He is very well known in the industry and always showcases an extraordinary couture collection.
JOE FRESH (Wednesday, October 24 @ 9 p.m.)
Three words: Affordable, Comfortable and Trendy. That’s what I love about this Canadian designer. Joseph Mimran, creative director of Joe Fresh, has been in the fashion and design industry for more than 25 years and really knows what he is doing. The collections are always stylish, made of high-quality fabrics and can be found at your local Loblaws SuperStore. Joe Fresh is one show I try not to miss because they always make them very fun and interactive. Also, if you ever run into Joe on the streets of Toronto, be sure to say hi, he is super friendly!
RACHEL SIN (Thursday, October 25 @ 6 p.m.)
Compared to the other designers, Rachel Sin is relatively new to the Canadian fashion industry. I’ve never seen a show, but I’m really looking forward to seeing her Spring 2013 collection this year. The woman’s style is impeccable, and judging from her fall/winter 2012 collection on the website, this designer will go far. Rachel Sin has got an eye for detail and really focuses on making every day work-wear more chic than your typical button-up shirt and pencil skirt combo. She is another Toronto designer who is very approachable, so be sure to tweet her sometime.
VAWK (Friday, October 26 @ 8 p.m.)
Designed and hand-crafted in Canada, VAWK is Sunny Fong’s baby. This label has been around since 2004 and the ready-to-wear collections can be found at The Bay. Due to work and school, I used to always miss VAWK’s show during Toronto Fashion Week, but I’m really excited that the Spring 2013 collection will be showcased at a decent time on a Friday night! How exciting is that? Sunny Fong is also extremely talented. He designs with love and passion, and it really shows. VAWK has designed fabulous outfits for celebrities including Elisha Cuthbert and Chantal Kreviazuk.
